About

Eve Ash asks Professor Robert Feldman about his book "The Liar in Your Life". Over years of research, he has found that lying is something almost everyone does, we do it to interact more effectively or to impress another person. We tell lies knowingly and without thinking. We invent our backgrounds. One interesting finding of a case study involving undergraduate students is that within 10 minutes of meeting someone, the first person will tell three lies.

We all lie

  • It greases the wheels of social interaction
  • A white lie is often because of wanting to be polite
  • We want to impress others
  • We want to conceal what we're doing
  • We tend to tell a lie (or three) within the first ten minutes of meeting another person
