About

Kylie Bell discusses how Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs is an insufficient assessment of what motivates people for organizational purposes. Edward Deci and Richard Ryan worked out that humans have three psychological needs that require being met at the same time: relationships, competency and autonomy. These three needs, called nutriments, when working well lead to people cooperating better, improving their ability to solve problems, feeling more free, creative and more motivated.

Self-Determination Theory (SDT) is:

  • Developed by Edward Deci and Richard Ryan
  • Looks after three things (nutriments): relationships, competency and autonomy
  • Differs from Maslow's well known Hierarchy of Needs
