About

Mindfulness is defined as concentrating on the present, which is difficult if you're distracted. Kylie Bell and Eve Ash discuss a study by Roy Baumeister where iPhone apps randomly tested people for what they were thinking about: the past, present or future. It also tested for wellbeing. People with the highest wellbeing were those who focused on the present. The next highest rating of wellbeing was those who were excitedly planning for the future, and not worried about what it might bring.

Roy Baumeister's mindfulness study found:

  • People were mostly focused on the future
  • Those with the highest wellbeing concentrated on the present
  • Those with the next highest wellbeing were people who were excited about and planning for the future
