Starting a new job can be difficult and lonely. The first day can be very challenging, and getting settled in takes time. When new staff feel welcomed they adjust and fit in more easily.

In this dramatized video case study, Sherry is new, but gets relegated to the bottom of the stairs, where she feels isolated and excluded from team activities and events. Carol, the team leader ignores Sherry and her induction of other new starters is patronizing and demeaning, while other team members make the new people feel welcome and valued.
