About

People who don't know or ignore accepted conventions of behavior pose a threat to psychological safety. These can range from aggressive clients, suppliers or team members whose manner is borderline hostile, or someone who feels the rules don't apply to them. We all need skills to deal with these threats. Explaining psychological safety rules to everyone, and reinforcing them is necessary, and is best done by senior management. If the team is under pressure, put emphasis on solving problems rather than criticism, using open language and neutralizing people's fears of criticism or blame. Role-model that this needs to be everyone's approach, not only through words but also body language. Emphasize inclusivity for all team members value feeling that they belong.

• Monitor threats to psychological safety for example aggressive outsiders who are unaware of your group's ground rules or team members who pay lip service to agreed behaviors.
• Explain and give warnings of consequences (in private).
• Choose open language and look for solutions, not blame.
• Create a sense of inclusion for all team members.
