About

Psychologist Peter Quarry explains there are two types of empathy: intellectual empathy (mentally knowing what someone feels) and emotional empathy (feeling someone elses emotions and wanting to help). Emotional empathy requires observation skills and gently probing for a deeper understanding of what is happening to that person. This opens up opportunities for compassionate dialogue and eventually problem-solving.

• Learn about two types of empathy and how they differ from sympathy.
• Recognize that intellectual empathy is mentally knowing what someone else feels.
• Understand that emotional empathy is when you feel someone's emotions and you want to help.
• Develop the skill of emotional empathy to help understand others, have compassionate dialogue and problem-solve.
