About

A workplace coach plays a vital role in overcoming people's weaknesses, building on their strengths and encouraging peak performance. People can build skills and strengths through self-directed learning, for example workshops, online tutorials and well-designed e-learning courses from accredited providers. But a coach is particularly helpful for hands-on experience or developing a particular skill, using a four-step approach explain, demonstrate, practice and feedback.

It is important that the coach exercises patience, possibly repeating the 4-step cycle until the person is comfortable with what they are doing. The coaching should not conclude until the person has demonstrated that they can perform the task competently to the required standard.

• Learn to build skills and enhance strengths using a four-step coaching model.
• Explain the task to be done (Let me describe how to do it)
• Demonstrate it (Ill show you how to do it)
• Get the person to practice it (Now you have a go)
• Give them feedback on how they went (So this is what you did well and what you need to improve)
• Continue coaching using the 4-step process until the task is done to the expected level.
