About

Most conflicts are characterized by binary thinking: the mentality of win-lose, "I'm right, you're wrong", "my perspective matters more than yours" mentality. When this happens, both sides become strident in pressing their viewpoint, rigid, determined to save face, rather than admit error. This causes an escalation and conflict spiral. We all need to recognize that, often, the correct way forward is not always apparent. If we argue in a binary way, we're probably guilty of making conjectures and assumptions, or being dogmatic which precludes improved understanding and decision-making.

• Understand the dynamics of conflict, typical binary thinking and the escalating conflict spiral.
• Avoiding conflict is not helpful.
• Conflicts are frequently binary (win-lose) by nature.
• A binary mindset compounds the problem ("I'm right, you're wrong").
• People become entrenched in their position (they don't wish to lose face).
• Anger and determination to win leads to a conflict spiral.
